When to Change Air Purifier and Humidifier Filters

HEPA: six to eight months, usually

A True HEPA layer catches particles down to 0.3 microns, and it does not rinse clean. As it loads, airflow drops and the purifier moves less air per hour. Most filters in our line are rated for six to eight months of daily running. If you have pets, cook often or live where wildfire smoke drifts in, shorten that.

Carbon wears out first

Activated carbon adsorbs odors and gases until its pores are full, and then it simply stops. That happens faster than a HEPA layer fills, which is why kits like our Winix Filter S and GermGuardian Filter C include four carbon pre-filters for every HEPA panel. If the room starts to smell like dinner again, the carbon is done.

Reset the reminder

Purifiers count hours, not dirt. After a swap, reset the filter light: on most LEVOIT units hold the filter button for three seconds; on Dyson TP04-generation towers hold Oscillation for five seconds. Check your manual for the exact press.

Humidifier wicks: watch the top edge

Evaporative humidifiers draw water up a wood-fiber or paper wick. Minerals in tap water crust at the top, and a crusted wick stops wicking. When the upper inch turns stiff, yellow or brown, swap it; in winter that is usually every one to two months. Distilled water and a weekly tank rinse stretch the interval.

Quick schedule

• HEPA filters: every 6–8 months.
• Carbon pre-filters: every 2–3 months.
• Dyson TP04 / HP04 sets: every 12 months.
• Humidifier wicks: every 1–2 months in heating season.
• Always reset the reminder after swap day.
